Urban Homesteading Today

Urban homesteading today is a growing trend. More people are finding they would like to establish some amount of self sufficiency in their lives, and have started to grow a garden, work on debt elimination, find alternative forms of power and even keeping animals.

The urban homesteader may have a fairly large yard or may be limited to a balcony or rooftop, but the desire is the same, to produce for themselves. Often the city dweller who desires a homestead life and has limited space can group with other like minded people and form a community that works together to overcome their limitations.

A lot can be grown in a small space, and it well planned a co-operative of people can produce a large amount of complimentary crops together, that none of them could have done on their own.

A close proximity of those in the co-op is a good thing when it comes to exchanging their harvest. They may be able to help each other out if someone needs to travel for any more than a couple of days.

There are also people that will have a large amount of usable space in their yards so that they can potentially produce much more than they can both consume and store. These folks have an opportunity to sell some of their crops at a farmers market or even to a local restaurant.

Whatever space you have, urban homesteading today is a good way to develop self sufficiency in your life.
